NEHEMIAH 10 - COMMITTED LIVING
Nehemiah 10
God had renewed His people through the knowledge and understanding of His Word. The people realized how far they had drifted from the Law of God and they decided to come back to God by making a firm covenant in writing (ch. 9, v. 38).
God is honored when we take our commitments seriously.
The covenant was a sealed document and it was signed by eighty-four of their princes, Levites, and priests (v. 1-27). The people all agreed that this was the necessary step after experiencing God’s mercy for their ignorance and disobedience. Now having knowledge and understanding, they were committing themselves to obedience (v. 28).
God is honored when we live out the commitments that we make.
The signed document entered them into an agreement with God. If they walked in the Law of God, He would bless them. If they walked away again, He would curse them, so that they would realize again that living without God is never a good idea (v. 29).
Living a committed life to God will always prove to be more fulfilling.
Knowing God’s Law changed the way the people would do things: They would keep marriages sacred to the Lord (v. 30), they would honor the Sabbath, and keep it holy (v. 31), and they would give generously to support the work of the house of God (v. 32-39)
When we commit to following God, we agree that he has access to every area of our lives, including our relationships, our work, our play, our time, and our money. And even when we fail to keep our commitments, God always remains committed to us.
